Getting this right matters more than moving too fast. The students who end up happiest with where they land are usually the ones who took an hour to think, not the ones who panicked into the first thing available.
Start with UCAS Hub
Before you do anything else, log into UCAS Hub. It’ll tell you whether you’re confirmed at your firm choice, confirmed at insurance, or in Clearing; don’t assume based on your grades alone. Universities sometimes confirm places even if you’ve narrowly missed the conditions, so let the system tell you for certain rather than guessing and potentially missing something you didn’t need to.
Once you know you’re in Clearing, move quickly on the search. Vacancies get updated in real time, and popular courses can fill within hours, so use the UCAS Clearing search tool rather than a list; course listings change fast, and a course showing as open at 9am might not be by lunchtime.
Shortlist, then make the call
You don’t need to decide in the first five minutes. Build a shortlist of 3 – 5 realistic options based on your grades, then rank them by what really matters to you: the course content, the city, how far it is from home, whether you know anyone else going there. Taking the time to compare properly usually beats grabbing the first thing that shows up.
Once you’ve got a shortlist, call the universities yourself rather than just adding a choice in UCAS and hoping. Ask directly: do they still have space on the course, what grades are they asking for, and can they make you a verbal offer? Universities move fast during Clearing, and a phone conversation gets you an answer instantly instead of waiting on an application to process.
Only add your Clearing choice into UCAS Hub once you’ve got that verbal offer. It’s a formal step; you can only add one at a time, and it should come after a university confirms on the phone that they want you. Once they’ve accepted your choice, they’ll confirm it through UCAS Hub and that’s when it’s official, so treat anything before that as provisional.
Sort the practical stuff early
Accommodation is the step people leave too late. Once your course is confirmed, don’t wait to book somewhere to live; look for accommodation with clear terms in case anything shifts in the next few weeks, and check what’s included (bills, WiFi, and so on) before you commit.
Paperwork’s worth getting ahead of too. Depending on your course and university, you might need ID, proof of address, and financial documentation for student finance. Keep everything in one place – a folder, a notes app, whatever works for you – so you’re not scrambling for a document on deadline day.
Know the dates that matter
Clearing doesn’t end on results day; it runs from July to October each year. Keep an eye on when Adjustment closes if your results were better than expected, when offer conditions need to be met, and the final dates for adding a new Clearing choice or submitting a new application.
